Ph.D. and Master Placement

As noted, the field of Coastal and Oceanographic Engineering is quite young in the United States.  Our department was one of the first to conduct research and offer academic training in this area in the U. S. and one of the best measures of excellence is the continued performance of our former Ph.D. graduates. Of the more than 60 Ph.D. graduates specializing in Coastal and Oceanographic Engineering since 1969, more than 15 are on the faculty of major universities (University of Delaware, Johns Hopkins University, Oregon State University, Naval Academy, Naval Postgraduate School, Georgia Institute of Technology, Virginia Institute of Marine Science, University of Maine, University of South Florida, University of South Alabama, Florida Institute of Technology, and other graduate schools in the United States, and about 10 are on the faculty of foreign universities.  These include several who have made notable contributions to national and international research and who serve as editors or on editorial boards for the significant journals in the field. Many of our graduates work in federal and state institutions (e.g., U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Engineering Research and Development Center, Naval Research Laboratory, National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Florida Water Management Districts, Florida Department of Environmental Protection, etc.) conducting research in Coastal and Oceanographic Engineering, while many work in private companies throughout the US. Some are founders and owners of successful engineering companies. The overwhelming majority of Coastal and Oceanographic Engineering graduates are successfully employed in their fields of interest, and the high demand for the quality graduates of this program has continued through the recent weak job markets.
