Welcome to Coastal and Oceanographic Engineering

Program Mission

To provide a high quality, broad academic program in coastal and oceanographic engineering including
experience and opportunities in applied and basic research to serve the needs of the State of Florida and the nation.

Educational Goals

• Promote innovative education in coastal and oceanographic engineering through a
sustained, periodic review of the teaching curriculum;
• Promote distance learning approaches for selected core courses of common interest to
practicing engineers;
• Continually attract top quality students by insisting on high quality in research and
teaching, and by maintaining pace with national trends in graduate student stipends;
• Continually identify and develop where essential, new and challenging areas of
technological applications, and base faculty hiring, as and when required, on their ability
to teach and conduct quality research related to these technologies;
• Promote application of latest computational technology for developing predictive tools
for coastal and oceanographic processes and interactions;
• Promote development of latest procedures in laboratory and field techniques for data
collection and analysis via the Coastal Engineering Laboratory; and
• Promote service to the State of Florida and the nation by enhancing acquisition of
archival material through the Coastal Engineering Archives.
Educational Objectives
• Prepare graduate students with an advanced level of understanding of coastal and
oceanographic processes and their interactions with nearshore and offshore marine
structures and ecosystems;
• Prepare graduate students to be effective as teachers in universities and colleges;
• Prepare graduate students to be effective practitioners of coastal and oceanographic
engineering; and
• Prepare graduate students to enable them to conduct quality level applied and basic
research in coastal and oceanographic processes and engineering.
